The current electoral system in the UK suffers from a lack of engagement that undermines our democratic legitimacy. While many view mandatory voting as an infringement on personal liberty, I would argue that it is a necessary duty, similar to jury service. Until we require participation, politicians will continue to prioritize the interests of specific demographics rather than the country as a whole. It is time we treat voting as a requirement rather than an option to ensure a truly representative parliament
