Evaluating the defensive trade-offs of the one-knee down stance
I’ve been looking closely at the transition in catching mechanics over the last few seasons, specifically the shift toward the one-knee down (OKD) stance even with runners on base. While it clearly improves the framing metrics for the bottom of the zone, I’m concerned about the lateral mobility and the ability to block spiked curveballs in high-leverage counts. For those of you coaching or playing at a competitive level, have you seen a significant increase in passed balls, or does the improved strike-calling outweigh the defensive risks? Would love to see some data or personal observations on the trade-off
