The saturation of costume-heavy comedy masks a decline in script quality
In the current landscape of short-form digital sketches, there is an increasing reliance on elaborate costuming and high-concept production values to carry the weight of the content. While the visual spectacle is impressive, I would argue that it is frequently used as a crutch to compensate for a lack of genuine comedic timing and subtext. The "visual gag" has become a shortcut to virality, often at the expense of the subtle, rhythmic editing and dry wit that defined the earlier eras of character comedy. Does anyone else feel that the art of the well-written punchline is being overshadowed by who has the most convincing prosthetic or period-accurate set?
