Is the 'high' in high jump purely optional these days?

Serious question: at what point do these athletes realize they have zero spatial awareness? I’ve been watching a lot of high jump and track fails lately, and it’s basically just people volunteering to get a lobotomy via a metal bar. Is there a specific training regimen to ensure you hit the bar with your face every single time, or is it just natural talent? I'm genuinely curious if anyone here actually does track and field—do you guys practice the "falling like a sack of potatoes" part, or does that just happen when the last three brain cells stop communicating? Does anyone have any actual insight into how you can miss a giant foam mat entirely?
