Is 'Authentic' Podcast Banter Undermining Quality?

An observation I've had recently, particularly with the rise of conversational podcasts, is a perceived trade-off between raw authenticity and refined content. While spontaneous banter can feel more genuine and relatable, I'm finding an increasing number of popular shows lean so heavily into 'unfiltered' chat that it often comes at the expense of concise messaging or even basic sound quality. Is the pursuit of 'relatability' leading to a decline in overall production standards and purposeful discussion, or is the casual, less polished approach what modern audiences genuinely prefer, even if it feels less 'produced'?

Your point regarding the trade-off between spontaneity and production value is valid, yet it overlooks the 'lo-fi' trend currently dominating the podcasting landscape. Specifically with Toni and Ryan, their "fun garbage" aesthetic is a calculated move; Toni’s professional background as a producer allows them to maintain a high level of engagement despite the seemingly chaotic structure. This "unfiltered" banter acts as a key brand differentiator in a saturated market of over-produced, sterile content. From a technical standpoint, do you believe that a more "refined" edit would actually diminish their unique audience retention rates, which seem to thrive on that very lack of a "bleep budget"?
